Early Orthodontic Treatment

So, why is seven the ideal age? By age 6 or 7, a child’s first adult molars have finished erupting, establishing the back bite. Early orthodontic treatment allows your child’s orthodontist to evaluate tooth relationships in detail, making it possible to identify potential orthodontic problems that need correction. Not all children will require treatment at this early age, but if treatment is necessary, it dramatically improves the overall orthodontic result.

While it isn’t right for all patients, early orthodontic treatment comes with a range of advantages. Treatment allows us to shape the development of the teeth and mouth, which lets us make significant alterations to tooth alignment that would be much more difficult in later years. In fact, because the upper jaw has yet to solidify into a single bone during childhood, we can use a device called a palatal expander to gently widen the upper jaw and make more room for teeth – a process that would require extensive oral surgery in later adolescence or adulthood.

Two-Phase Orthodontics

Our team at SmileLife Orthodontics understands that the majority of oral issues can be prevented through early treatments. With our two-phase orthodontic treatment plans, our orthodontists can evaluate your child’s oral condition and identify any growth patterns that may cause future problems. These issues are addressed and treated during the early childhood years before full development has occurred.

Two-phase orthodontic treatment is a specialized process combining tooth straightening and physical, facial changes. Typically, this treatment plan is available to younger children as a means to help prevent more intense and complex treatment later on. The purpose of two-phase treatment is to maximize the opportunity to accomplish an ideal, healthy, functioning, and aesthetic result that will remain stable throughout your child’s life.

The goal of Phase One treatment is to help the jaw develop in a way that will accommodate all of the permanent teeth and improve the way the upper and lower jaws fit together. Often we can find and treat a jaw discrepancy at a young age and thus prevent the need for a future, more invasive treatment plan.

After the first phase of treatment, there is a resting period where any remaining permanent teeth can erupt undisturbed, and our orthodontists will continue to monitor your child’s growth.

During the second phase of treatment, we focus on making sure that each tooth remains in its proper position and that everything aligns correctly. This phase often includes braces or Invisalign®.

After reviewing the results of the initial X-rays and photos, our highly trained and skilled orthodontist, assisted by our treatment coordinator, will explain your dental malocclusion, collaborate as an orthodontics “team” to determine the best treatment plan and options for your specific situation then review it in full detail with you.  Our treatment coordinator will also discuss your insurance benefits and present you with an estimate of costs.

Although every orthodontics case is different, we’re proud of our ability to provide affordable, high-quality care to all our patients and we offer financing almost anyone can afford.
