Dr. Diana Pardo is new to the Las Cruces area. After working in Boston, Massachusetts, she was in search of warmer weather and to exercise her native Spanish language, which led her to our beautiful city. She joined SmileLife Orthodontics in Las Cruces, NM and is extremely happy with her decision to settle in the southwest.
Born and raised in Colombia, South America, she moved to Birmingham, Alabama, as an American Field Service (AFS) exchange student, and graduated high school in the United States. She is still extremely close with her foreign exchange family and visited them this summer on her move out west.
After high school, Dr. Pardo went back to Bogota and attended Xaverian University and had her sights set on dental school from the beginning. She was a big fan of her cousin, Anna Maria, who was a dentist and decided to follow in her footsteps.
In her last year of dental school, she applied and was accepted to the orthodontic residency program. “I found orthodontics fun,” Dr. Pardo says. “It lends itself more toward engineering and spatial relationships, which I’ve always found fascinating. I love designing a plan to get everything to align.”
She practiced orthodontics in Bogota until 2000, when she moved to Boston and enrolled in Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, when her mother, living in Florida, suggested she immigrate to the US.
“I am forever grateful to my mom, for helping me with my transition to the US and sponsoring my first two years of US dental school.”
After completing dental school, she then entered Tufts Orthodontic Residency Program and graduated in 2009, with a Certificate in Orthodontics and Master of Science degree. Dr. Pardo has graduated from two dental schools and two orthodontic residency programs.
“The plan was to always do both all over again. I wanted to be an orthodontist in the U.S., so I had a plan,” says Dr. Pardo.
Dr. Pardo is already loving the area and doesn’t miss deep snow or below-zero temperatures one bit!
“I’ve already met so many wonderful people, had quite a few interesting cases and am so thankful for my team. The staff at SmileLife have been incredible; they are upbeat and excellent at their jobs,” says Dr. Pardo.
Dr. Pardo moved here with her husband, Hernando, whom she’s been married to for 16 years. They love watching movies, going to Formula 1 races and traveling — their favorite places are Spain or any beautiful beach.
They’ve been trying out local Las Cruces lunch and dinner spots, and their current favorite is Indulgence Bakery & Cafe on South Main Street.
And for her final question, she of course had to be asked RED or GREEN? Her answer: “Green chili — especially green enchiladas.”
